One up front against such poor opposition
Somebody please explain how that's a good idea.

Noble and Nolan together in the middle of the park was clearly not working.
Hopefully Bilic will have another look at the match and realise that them together just does not work.

Don't push it.

Yes that's true, to be fair we'd all be having a different conversation today if we'd had a spot more luck at a few points early in the game.

An early goal might have made Maiga all of a sudden look like a footballer.

Fine margins!

Re: One up front against such poor opposition
We played 4-2-3-1 in general...although Zarate played higher than the traditional link man.

However I'd argue in possession we played 2-2-3-3, as Cresswell and OBrien as soon as the centre halves got the ball pushed up to near the 18 yard line of the oppo, with the wingers even higher.

The idea of a disconnected 1 up top wasnt even close to the truth. In possession Bilic was essentially driving the team to pile forward at pace.

It stopped working in the second half, as Noble and Nolan totally ran out of gas and stopped showing for the ball, leaving the fullbacks up high and the centrebacks with no one to lay the ball off to. Only improved again once Nolan went off, and Poyet came on, adding some energy back into the middle.

Was also noticeable how the centrehalf we're instructed to step up very high, and push in and press to win the ball back when lost up the pitch....Reid making strong challenges in the oppo half a number of times.

It was a 4-4-2 with Zarate and Maiga were upfront.

I also recall Morgan almost getting a ball drop nicely after it had been pin balling about in their box but it just didn't fall right.

".....but I don't fully see the benefit in last night's situation in playing that way when the only player in the box is Maiga....."

Good point. Maiga is absolutely useless so that makes a lot of sense. With regard to Nolan and the knock downs, second ball etc. To be fair a few times last night it just didn't quite bounce or fall for him. On another night we could've had 2 or 3 from crosses coming in and then the ball falling nicely.

The knee jerking on here is immense.

Could of played Tomkins up front.

I do agree- a lot of our problems came from the fact our two strikers were rather poor.

I agree it was a weird selection in way given that we have not really been looking to buy wingers.

But if you played a diamond that would have probably put Lee and Maiga as the two forward with Zarate behind and maybe he wanted to have a look at Jarvis in the only position he really can play as well as Amalfitano.

I agree that I could have gone a lot different if we had a centre forward with physical presence as we seemed to put a lot of crosses in.

It's a good point Russ, but I don't fully see the benefit in last night's situation in playing that way when the only player in the box is Maiga and he's up against 2-3 defenders. Zarate didn''t get into the box, not that he'd have been able to win a header but at least he could have made a pest of himself. The only player who could have been effective was Nolan, (knock downs, second ball and whatnot) and he was mainly playing in front of the back four. I'm not sure we had the players at our disposal to do what we were trying to do effectively enough. It didn't help that both wingers were not playing very well.

Shame Carroll wasn't available really. Last night would have been perfect for him!

I agree. But I think with regard to what I said about JOB he will definitely be kept around to step in for Jenko. Thought he was good last night.

I'm gonna have to partly disagree with that. I do think with Jenko we may have created / scored more but I have to say I thought JOB was excellent last night. He was solid, composed and used the ball very well. He did put in some decent crosses when he got down the line and created space to do so.

But, yes, I agree Jenko is more dynamic and I think would've done more damage.

Also some opinions that this was a preseason warm up. It wasn't it is a knock out CUP competition, if we lose over the two legs we're out of Europe.

Re: One up front against such poor opposition
I think he aired in the side of caution, not knowing the players that well he probably took a stab at what was played last season given then line up.

Very cautious approach

Poor opposition? Defensively they were well organised and pretty good I thoight. We never had the gumption or the quality to break them down.

Re: One up front against such poor opposition
On another day Maiga could have had a hat trick & the scoreline, maybe not the performance, would have looked better

You can't blame Bilic for trying out the old guard to evaluate if they have further use at the club

On the face of it, Maiga, Nolan & possibly Noble on last nights performance might be considering where their future lies!

With the team he put out I'm sure Bilic would & should have expected a far more comfortable win

Agreed. Assuming we get through this round the 2 EL games following would need to be pretty serious coming as they do 10 and 3 days before Arsenal.

Re: One up front against such poor opposition
If Jenkinson would've been ready for last night (is he registered?) then he would've torn them apart, what with how much of the ball JOB got, but obviously did nothing with.

Re: One up front against such poor opposition
'Nolan is not a defensive midfielder'

1 goal last season in 33 games would suggest he can no longer be considered an attacking midfielder either.
